May 2022

As one season comes to a close, another one begins! May is always a month of celebration for the team at JTM. May kicked off with our last squad race of the season where our 70.3 kicked off with Jarrod finishing a nail-biting second, he was followed across the line by our male relay team anchored home to second place with a solid half marathon from Myles Wood! The day then shifted to a multitude of first time finishes - first in the 70.3 with Nicko Gransden and Lauren Bullman before we headed to hill to cheer home our Ironman finishers. Big congratulations to everyone who ran down the red carpet and a particular congrats to JTMs newest Ironman finishers, Amy Betts, Ewen Ford and Ally Martin!

The weeks post Port Macquarie give our coaches and athletes a chance to refresh with a two week break. This year’s break was much needed with a refreshed squad back on deck already putting in some hard work for next season!

While most rested, a few of our athletes were out collecting medals as Leeanne Tennant showed why she was named joint MVP of the TACT interclub series with another gold medal in Port Stephens. It was also great to see Stu Cayzer back out on course at the same race!! Kim Elms followed suit in Mogo winning her age group the 2hr trail race backing up from a second place finish in the mixed 4hr MTB relay the day before! The month of racing was capped with Kirstie Caplikas taking the tape at the TriNSW club championships on her way to third overall. Kristie’s finish meant that of the 8 Elite Energy triathlon races this year a JTM athlete grabbed the tape in 6 of them! In total 11 different JTM athletes grabbed the tape at a race this season!!

Our season celebrations in May were formalised with the JTM gala night on May 21st. The night was full of fun, food and the announcement of our JTM award winners and was swiftly followed up the next morning with a few raging headaches. More info on our hugely successful gala night below!

Athlete Spotlight

Ashleigh Webb

If you’ve seen a lonely figure swimming laps at Tuggeranong pool or in Lake Burley Griffin of late, chances are it’s Ashleigh Webb as she prepares to cross the English Channel in October.

Ash is swimming the English Channel for more than just herself as she looks to raise funds for The Kallan Lodge Library which she has founded to establish literature and music for young people in Australia’s mental health facilities.

Ash has recently qualified for her channel swim (on more than one occasion) and showed she is more than on her way to finding ground in France by swimming an 8 hour 23km swim in 15C water during her most recent cold water camp.

JTM Gala

One of the highlights of our yearly calendar, the 2022 JTM gala was held on May 21st. Thank you to Alex and Suzie for welcoming us into your home and for all the work behind the scenes to allow us to celebrate together!

Taking home the JTM awards for female and male performance of the year as voted by you were Amy Betts (Ironman Australia) & Blake Wooster (Batemans Bay Triathlon). Thank you to everyone who voted and congratulations Amy and Blake on what were both incredible finishes last season!

Our most coveted award of the year is the JTM Values Award. This award goes to the person or people who exemplify what it means to be a JT Multisport athlete in giving back to their club and the triathlon ACT community. This year we had two people deserving of the award with Sonia Worsley and Jarrod Osborne being recognised for their work in giving back and their role in creating the amazing environment we have at JTM. We look forward to both Sonia and Jarrod being recognised at the TACT awards on July 2nd for their outstanding achievements this year.

Training Tools

Do you know how much you’re sweating during sessions? We’re doing everything we can to set ourselves up for a big 22/23 including sweat testing. Calculating your sweat rate is easy. Simply weigh yourself and your drink bottles before and after the session to establish how much you have lost in sweat during the session. To determine your rate per hour take the total sweat loss and divide it by the number of minutes in the session before multiplying by 60 to determine your sweat rate (the amount of sweat lost per hour). By calculating your sweat rate you can determine how much you should be drinking during your sessions. Your fitness, intensity and environment will impact your sweat rate so don’t forget to test and record in different environments and intensities!

Some things to watch out for

  • Ensure you are dry and have as little clothing as possible while weighing. Avoid weighing in wet clothes/swimmers where possible

  • Ensure you have gone to the bathroom prior to the session, a toilet stop during the session will skew your results
